How to Maintain a Pneumatic Hammer: A Step-by-Step Checklist

2026-03-12
Proper maintenance and care of your pneumatic hammer are essential for maximizing its service life and ensuring consistent performance. How to Maintain a Pneumatic Hammer?

Seven Key Maintenance Tips for Your Pneumatic Hammer:

  1. Regularly check the oil level in the gearbox located below the piston cylinder to ensure the gears are properly lubricated during operation.
  2. Use standard lubricating oil; expensive specialty oils are unnecessary. Select the appropriate oil viscosity based on the ambient temperature.
  3. Always ensure the oil pump contains an adequate amount of oil, keeping the level above the minimum mark. Before starting the hammer, manually operate the pump handle 10 times to circulate oil into the cylinder, which reduces wear during startup.
  4. Periodically inspect the oil lines for leaks. Check the sight glass on the top of the oil pump cup to ensure proper oil dripping.
  5. Before forging, inspect all components such as the anvil block and guides for any looseness.
  6. After forging, re-check all exposed bolts and tighten any that have become loose.
  7. Depending on usage, it is generally recommended to change the gearbox oil every 3 to 6 months.

Fifteen Operational Guidelines (Using a 150KG Pneumatic Hammer as an Example):

  1. Operators must be familiar with the hammer's structure and performance to use it correctly and prevent accidents.
  2. Adhere to the recommended service intervals and perform regular inspections. Replace damaged parts promptly to prevent further component failure.
  3. If abnormal noises occur during operation, stop the hammer immediately for inspection and repair.
  4. Frequently check the oil level in the lubrication cups and ensure the oil meets specifications (e.g., flash point, impurities, viscosity).
  5. Pay consistent attention to the lubrication of all moving parts.
  6. Strictly maintain the specified clearances between the anvil face and hammer guides, and between the lower anvil and the ground. Regularly verify these distances to prevent machine damage.
  7. Periodically inspect the spherical valve in the buffer mechanism to prevent the hammer from damaging the upper cylinder cover.
  8. In winter, insulate the oil cups to prevent the oil from freezing and obstructing lubrication.
  9. Before operation, check that all control levers move freely and smoothly.
  10. During regular maintenance, clear all air passages to ensure the hammer operates at full efficiency.
  11. Keep the motor clean. Perform an annual internal cleaning, avoiding the use of kerosene or gasoline on the coils to prevent insulation damage.
  12. Do not forge cold or insufficiently heated metal.
  13. Do not leave the hammer in the raised position for more than one minute to prevent overheating, energy waste, and reduced service life.
  14. Only experienced operators should run the hammer, especially when performing single strikes, which require skilled technique.
  15. Always disconnect the power supply after use.
